ForUm – “Forum for Urban Futures” – an international network of urban experts under the supervision of the Department of Geography, University of Cologne, Germany – is organising a series of international Summer Schools and seminars with financial support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Two events per year are taking place in different Southeast Asian countries, whereas every conference is organised in close cooperation with the local Asian network partners.
The program focuses on an active contribution to the North-South-South dialogue in the field of worldwide urbanisation and provides a forum for exchange on concepts, research and application of Southeast Asian and German universities, institutions, private sector, civil society’s groups, including local NGOs and non-university partners.
More than 20 international experts from seven Southeast Asian countries and Germany are sharing their experiences and expertise and discuss challenges and conflicts in the field of urban development. Scientific presentations and discussions as well as city excursions and visits of international organisations and project sites complete the program.
SCHEDULE
The next ForUm Expert Seminar "Urban Public Space and Governance" will take place from 23-31 October in Indonesia, hosted by the Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta and the Sebelas Maret University (USM) in Solo. The Seminar is targeting to provide a platform for an efficient and fruitful North-South-South dialogue among participants from various disciplines and institutions from all over Southeast Asia and Europe: Academics, governmental and non-governmental representatives, planners and practitioners will share their knowledge and experiences on urban challenges.
The core focus will be on "Urban Public Space and Governance" and we are very grateful for the strong commitment of our Indonesian team which is preparing a very interesting and complex programme for us. With this international conference we will also continue the current discussion on urban heritage by visiting various sites in Yogya and Solo.
We are glad to inform you that ForUm network, in close cooperation with local partners and funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as well as the German Development Service (DED), is going to organise a second seminar on Urban Heritage. It will take place in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR, from 3 July - 10 July 2010 . Many countries in Southeast Asia have inherited a rich historic architecture and urban heritage. Its great variety, styles and manifestations illustrate different recent phases of the country's history. Greatly neglected and basically unknown, urban heritage is often left unattended, destroyed or improperly restored. This Seminar is targeting at providing a platform for a North-South-South dialogue among the participants and networks from Asia and Europe. Stakeholders from universities, institutions, private sectors, practitioners and civil society groups, including local partners and non-university partners will share their knowledge and experiences.
The Summer School has been organised by the ForUm network under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Frauke Kraas and took place in Cologne, Germany, between 22 August and 1 September 2009. More than 40 participants of 8 different nations and various disciplines shared their expertises.

The international "Alumni-Expert-Seminar" took place at the at the Gadjah Mada University of Yogyakarta, Indonesia under the supervision of Dr. Hartono, Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Prof. Dr. Frauke Kraas from the department of Geography at the University of Cologne. The event was developed to concretise the programme of networking 2007-2009 as well as to continue the scientific exchange against the global challenge of increasing urbanisation. The situation of the people in the southern part of Yogyakarta after the terrible earthquake disaster of May 2006, ongoing problems and aid activities has been an additional focus of the programme.

Planned and realized by a university consortium of the "Scientific Working Group Southeast Asia" within the German Geographical Society (DGfG) the summer school took place under the chair of Prof. Dr. Frauke Kraas and the coordination of Dipl.-Geogr. Christine Knie at the Department of Geography, University of Cologne, Germany. The alumni event was developed against the background of the global challenge of increasing urbanization with its problems and conflicts.
The summer school as an instrument of sustainable networking had the aim to extend the so far mostly bilateral contacts between the partner universities and create a broad basis for enduring multinational links.
