with the special focus on
"URBAN DRIVING FORCES I"
18 March to 1 April 2007
Metro Manila and Cagayan de Oro, Philippines
The event was the first one of a new series of international Summer School programmes of ForUm Network in 2007-2009 with the focus on urban challenges and conflicts. The programme took place in Metro Manila and the SEARSOLIN Institute of Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro.
Special emphasis of the seminar was put on the following aims and programme topics:
An international group of urban experts from 8 different countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Germany, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) from various governmental and non-governmental institutions, universities and projects, private sector and civil society groups shared their expertise and experiences. More than 40 presentations and discussions were complemented by visits of international organisations and project sites.
The Summer School proved to be an interdisciplinary platform for the discussion of urbanization-related subjects from different thematic, cultural, social and political viewpoints and the integration of more than 20 new experts from different southeast Asian countries. The two locations and topic-related excursions provided an insight into the various urbanisation-related problems of the country.
The joint development and substantiation of ongoing cooperation efforts will be a continuous main part of the agenda, supported by presentations and discussions of proposals and the development of future integrated teaching and research projects. Concrete agreements of mutual support and academic exchange, e.g. visiting lecturers, e-learning, joint supervision of scientific research, in combination with project-based cooperation with non-academic partners from the private sector and civil society are the focal points of the future networking.
